I was commissioned to make this gown for a lady attending an Edwardian Ball. She designed her own costume, and I created this dress from her sketch. It consists of two pieces- the under dress, and the bustled dress worn on top. The under dress is made of bridal satin, and trimmed with an antique-looking floral jacquard. The jacquard matches the vest that her date wore (also displayed in this Gallery). The trim on the top of the dress is finished with a hand-made satin cording, and has a unique shape on the back. I put extra care into making all of the trim pieces symmetrical. The back panel of the skirt is gathered to make it more like a bustled dress from the time period. The trim on the bottom of the dress was carefully box-pleated by hand, which was quite an undertaking! The over dress is made of a wide boned belt of the same jacquard as the trim on the under dress, and chiffon in a pale green color. The bustle is made of two layers of chiffon, which was carefully pleated and attached to the belt. A string of glass pearls and a decorative hanging pendant adorn the back of the gathered chiffon straps. |
